If you have identified the need for a shower chair, but you are struggling with space constraints in either your bathroom or your shower enclosure then the retractable shower chair may well be the sensible alternative. The retractable shower chair is sometimes also referred to as the fold up, fold down, or wall mounted chair for your shower.

In essence the chair is attached to the wall with a frame. The frame is sometimes adjustable to allow differing heights and builds of those using the shower to use the chair quickly and easily. The retractable shower chair needs to be fixed to a wall robust enough to take the weight of an adult when the chair is attached. A plaster board wall on a timber frame will not typically be suitable for such a chair as it is unlikely that the fixings to the wall will be robust enough to take this weight.

If the wall does not seem as though it will take sufficient weight then there are retractable chair alternatives which have legs which extend when the chair seat is lowered or raised into place. This type of fitting considerably reduces the risk if the type of wall and wall fixing is in doubt.

In summary the retractable shower chair is a sensible option if space is a constraint. In addition it allows a number of differing ability types to use the shower as for those who need a chair for their shower, one is available, already installed. And for those who don’t, the chair is easily stored out of the way against the shower enclosure wall.
